Heads up homeschoolers, parents, and teachers! This looks like a fantastic resource for teaching science!
I just came across this great new science resource for homeschoolers called Mystery Science! It’s an online science program featuring “open-and-go” lessons that inspire kids in grades K-5 to love science! And, for a limited time, you can get a free subscription for this school year (through June 2017)! An annual homeschool membership would run you $129 – so this is a fantastic deal!
Once your free membership has been activated, you can log in to Mystery Science.com and select from any of these science units:
I love that each unit is a ready-to-go package! Each unit contains:
- Unit Overview – a brief description of the unit topics and measurable objectives.
- Mystery lessons – each unit contains several ‘mystery’ lessons taught through a series of engaging instructional videos. There are discussion prompts (topic-related questions to get kids thinking and talking about what they are learning) dispersed throughout to guide the students (and teachers) through the concept.
- Activity Prep – each lesson comes with a detailed prep list complete with student printouts, supply lists, and directions on how the activity will flow with the students. There are also videos that will lead the student through the activity.
- Assessment – each lesson offers a student assessment sheet that can be discussed orally or given as a written exam.
I don’t know about you, but as much as I loved my science courses at University, I just don’t feel equipped to teach some concepts to my kid! Having a ready-to-go resource like this is awesome!
UPDATE: My free membership was just activated this morning (8/14), and I have to say in just looking through a couple of the units, I am completely blown away with this program! The unit topics look age appropriate and interesting, the instructional videos are fun and engaging, and the activities seem very easy to do at home!
As a home educator that struggles every time my child asks a science-related question (hello again YouTube!) – and not wanting to rely on a boring, painful to teach, expensive, boxed, grade-leveled curriculum every year – I can honestly say, if this membership were not free, I would gladly pay the annual fee!
There are still about 5,000 free memberships left – so sign up today if you haven’t yet! For more information on this awesome program, go here.
(P.S. I am not affiliated with this program, just super excited about finding it and getting started teaching it!)
